Norton

NORTON
Norton, a British Brand, was founded in 1898 and based in Birmingham as a manufacturer of fittings and parts for the two wheeled trade. The company diversified by 1902 and started building their own motorcycles with bought-in engines but this was not enough for the British Norton! In 1908 Norton introduced their own Norton-built engine and so began production of single and later twin-cylinder motorcycles that were to become famous the world over! In 1907 Norton won the twin-cylinder class in the first Isle of Man TT and the Isle of Man Senior TT was won by Norton ten times! The first Norton Logo, a simple Art Nouveau design was scrapped in favour of the “Curly N” designed by James Norton and his daughter Ether – this made its debut on motorcycles in 1915.
Norton not only made an inpact in the racing world but also on the ordinary motorcyclists because of their performance and reliability. A majorly famous motorcycle by Norton was introduced in 1949 called simple the Model 7, which later became known as The Norton Dominator – a pushrod 500cc twin cylinder mean machine!
Norton’s expertise experimented with engines and found that by moving the engine slightly up, down, left, right, forward or backwards could find and deliver a “Sweet Spot” in terms of handling and this is one Norton legacy that Motorcycle designers of today still use!
The Norton Dominator was introduced to the international market in 1951 as The Model 88 – but with a Featherbed Frame. In 1960 Norton developed a new Featherbed Frame with the upper frame nails bent inwards for greater comfort for the rider – the frame was made by AMC.
The last Manx Norton’s were sold in 1963 – this famous motorcycle is still much sought after.
The Norton Maxman was then introduced for the American market – a 650cc followed by the 750cc Norton Atlas. For the Bristish market the Norton 650SS was launched. The Norton Atlas 750cc became fast and well known for its vibration!
Sadly the company did not survive but the name Norton and their mean machines live on!
