Suzuki, named after its founder Michio Suziki, was established in 1909 as looms manufacturer for the Japanese Silk Industry. After about thirty years as a loom manufacturer Suzuki diversified into other products but it was not until 1951 that Suzuki seriously got into the motorcycle industry. The first motorcycle manufactured by Suzuki, the “Power Free” was actually a motorised bicycle! The “Power Free” was so inventive, creative and innovatively designed that it caught the government of Japans eye and Suzuki received a subsidy in order to continue their research. The company started producing better motorcycles and by 1962 had won their first 50cc Grand Prix World Championship! Suziki had well and firmly established itself in the motorcycle world by the 1960s; The Suzuki name became well known not just in its home country but in the European and American Motorcycle world too. Suzuki manufactured, in the late 1980s. the fasted Japanese 250cc – the Suzuki X-6 Hustler. Not content with that Suzuki also started gaining fame in the Motocross world winning the world championship several times between 1971 and 1976 in the 500cc MX race. By the 1980s Suzuki had not just gained the respect of the riders but the racing community as well. Around this time Suzuki made a further impact in the world of motorcycle with their GSX-R750 – one of the most important and influential motorbikes of this era the GSX-R were the lightest bike in its class. This line is still available today in sizes ranging from 600cc to 1000cc. Today, Suzuki is one of the four big names in the Japanese motorcycle industry.
