Yamaha dates back to 1877 when Torakusu Yamaha started with Nippon Gakki Company later renamed as Yamaha Corporation – a manufacturer of fine musical instruments. With the growth of the company exploration into other industries began.
During World War 2 the company started producing airplane propellers and this is what played an important part into Yamaha’s entry into the Motorcycle Industry with the foundation of Yamaha Motor Corporation in 1955.
The First Yamaha Motor Company’s President Ginichi Kawakami said “If you are going to do something, be the best” and under this motto Yamaha with all its creativity and spirit became one of the biggest players in the motorcycle industry. Soon after conception came the YAMAHA YA-1, fondly referred to as “Acatombo” (Red Dragonfly). This machine although more expensive then its competitors became an immediate great success. It was RELIABLE, it was BEAUTIFUL and it was FAST (YA-1 obtained excellent overall results in the most important local races of the time – MOUNT FUGI; 3rd place and MOUNT ASAMA: 1st Place). YA-1’s aggressive attitude in the sporting world Yamaha showed the world they had arrived and they were going to be fierce competitors! That is exactly what they have done as to just say Yamaha had success racing bikes would be an understatement – Yamaha have carried their success from conception to present day.
It was in 1959 that the first fully-fledged sports motorcycle, by a Japanese Maker, was released. The first Yamaha boat CAT-21 won the 1st Pacific 1000km Motorboat Marathon. In 1964 Yamaha claimed its 1st manufacturer and rider title for 250cc class of the road race World GP. Yamaha released the DT-1 trails bike in 1968 and followed this up two years later with the first 4 stroke engine XS1.
The year after Rampdale Ltd started Yamaha's OX88 Race engine competed in F1 for the first time and so the history of the models manufactured and the victories achieved goes on and on…Even today the Yamaha name has oomph and impact in fact Yamaha is still one of the major players in the motorcycle industry.
