DOUBLE TOPS - written by Paul Baggott 13/08/09
If you love motorcycles, this is the best time of the year - sun hopefully blazing down with miles of inviting roads to ride astride your pristine pride and joy. But the trouble with that pride and joy is keeping it pristine. Every ride, even in perfect conditions, usually means an hour or two back in the garage, cleaning and polishing. Less-than-perfect conditions result in longer and more comprehensive doses of tender loving care.
And then, of course, the appeal of summer weather might persuade you to extend evening or weekend leisure riding into the daily commuter run too. Apart from the problem of finding time to keep your bike in tiptop condition if it's ridden on a daily basis, you'll also quickly start stacking on the mileage - and that has a significant cost when it comes to trade-in time.
There's an answer to every challenge, though, and the solution to this particular conundrum is one being chosen by an increasing number of bikers. Whether your principal choice of mount covers the sports, tourer, adventure, cruiser (or whatever!) slots, have you ever consider keeping that bike for 'best' and acquiring a second-string machine too? It makes a lot of sense.
Adding a more budget-oriented and probably smaller-capacity bike to your personal vehicle pool can have a broad range of advantages. Because it's not Numero Uno among your motorcycling possessions, you'll feel less guilty about how you treat it and the financial implications of using it for a more rigorous set of duties such as basic transport and all-weather riding.
It'll also allow you to get more out of your motorcycling the full year round. Let's face it, most of us now put our cherished bike away for the winter, safely cocooned in a warm dry garage or workshop, and then wait impatiently until spring before it sees the light of day again. But then along come those clear, crisp, bright winter days when we are tempted to drag it out for a quick blast, and we end up wrestling with our conscience - knowing what the inevitable seasonal road grit, grime and salt is going to do to that paint and chrome. A second bike involving much less emotional and monetary commitment neatly side-steps this potential grief.
There's also the social factor. A second bike can be effectively shared among friends and relations. Or perhaps you've got kids itching to learn to ride? Well, just stick your L-plates on that, son. You might get the wife or girlfriend to have a go too. It certainly beats the perpetual-pillion syndrome.
But 'hold on!' I hear you cry. 'Bikes are big-ticket leisure equipment and I can't afford to tango on two.' Not true. Lower-spec middleweight or lightweight (as in 125cc) tackle are currently a lot cheaper than you think, especially given there are such great deals about in these straitened times. You are also likely to extract much better value out of such a purchase over time. Because you are likely to keep it longer and cover far more miles on it, the effect of depreciation tends to be far more economical.
And doubling up doesn't mean doubling your insurance costs either. Venturing further down the field in capacity and price tag tends to mean a lower premium anyway but putting two bikes on one policy, depending on conditions of cover, can also be a cash-saving grace.

Rampdale Takes a Dive! 03/07/09
Early in the morning of 2 July, Managing Director John Coates took a group of us to an airfield in Chatteris, Cambs. to do a 12,000ft sponsored tandem skydive for each of our nominated charities.
"Team Rampdale" From left to right;
John Spatz (broker), Esther Coates, John Coates (M.D.), Emma Harnett (broker)and Mike Wandsworth (I.T. Manager)
It was a nice warm day, with clear skies and plenty of sunshine. After a training session with the well experienced instructors (where not to put your hands, not to pull cords etc.), we set about the task of waiting for our bacon sandwich and our names to be called to get ready for the jump. Unfortunately, that bacon breakfast would have to wait as we were among the first jumps of the day!
Harnesses on, we were ready to board the plane, a 14-passenger 'Nomad'. It took about 20 minutes to get up to 12,000ft, at which point the door on the side opens and we all line up to jump (more like fall from a sitting position) out of the plane. None of us chickened out, although there was quite a bit of colourful language from one or two jumpers.
The free-fall stage took about 40-50 seconds, falling in excess of 120mph, until we got to about 5,000 feet and the parachute was deployed. with a bit of a jolt, the 'chute slows us down so much that it takes nearly 5 minutes to reach the ground. The view from this height is nothing short of amazing.
We all reached the ground safely, with such a buzz that we all wanted to go back to the plane and do it again!
All the sponsorship money we collected went to various charities such as MacMillan Cancer Support, Cancer Research UK and the R.S.P.C.A.
All in all we had a fantastic day and we would all love to do it again!
We'll keep in touch about our up-coming charity events and post details on this site.

Rampdale rewards longest customer 29/04/09
20 years ago Sheila & Leslie Snelling came into the Rampdale offices to set up an insurance policy. Today 20 years on Mr & Mrs Snelling are still using Rampdale for their insurance, and to mark the anniversary Rampdale’s company director John Coates decided it would be a great time for Rampdale to offer Mr & Mrs Snelling a FREE insurance policy as one of our most loyal customers.
On 27th April Carwyn Llewellyn and Dion Ling from Rampdale went to visit Mr & Mrs Snelling to give them their free policy. They also brought for them 4 cans of beer which may sound unusual but as John explained “20 years ago when things were a lot quieter they called into our office which was then based in Finchley, North London. I spent some time arranging the required policies, monies were handed over and proposal forms duly signed. Half an hour later Mr Snelling popped back with four cans of beer as a thank you. Needless to say a couple of cans were cracked open and 20 years later our relationship still continues”.
Mr & Mrs Snelling were extremely touched that John had remembered their kind act and along with being given the free policy explained that nobody had ever done anything like this for them before.

Mr Snelling related to Carwyn and Dion stories of his time riding bikes and spoke of his fondness for the old British bikes such as BSA vehicles. He also spoke of his many trips to America and how while spending time out there he became a fan of Harley Davidson.
John said he was delighted to offer such loyal and lovely people as Mr & Mrs Snelling a free policy and looks forward to many more years of service.
