In 1981, Antonio Pinto, aged 22, opened a motorcycle workshop in Portugual following which in 1987 he and his brother (as part of the campany AJP)produced its first motorcycle the Ariana 125 (named after Antonio’s daughter). Several years later in 1995 a prototype was created called AJP Galp 50 (created in partnership with Petrogal) and then in 2001 the AJP PR4 was launched on the market. This was a four-stroke 125cc motorcycle built to a very high specification and, for the first time the fuel tank was built under the driver's seat lowering the gravitational axis of the bike. With this innovation, there was an increase in export to England, France and Germany who were the first countries to buy AJP motorcycles. In 2003 AJP relocated in Lousada, following which in 2004 was the creation of the AJP PR4 200cc with a more powerful engine. With this model there was an expansion of export to countries such as Spain, Italy, Greece and Poland. In 2007 the AJP PR3 200 MX was launched which was built with a lightweight aluminium frame and a more modern, attractive design. The PR3 weighs in at only 89kg and has a ranking as the lightest four-stroke 200cc enduro in the world! It is as agile as a trials bike, but is still the size of a full bike. AJP's most ambitious project to date is the PR5 launched late in 2009 with a 250cc fuel-injected engine which is still only 100kg.
It is said that AJP is quite different from the rest of the motorcycle manufacturers in that Antonio himself hand checks every bike that leaves his factory.
