Joe Stevens was an engineer who owned the Stevens Screw Company based near Wolverhampton. The company, which enjoyed a good reputation for quality engineering, built its first motorcycle in 1897 using a USA imported Mitchell engine. The Stevens family then went on to develop their own designs including V-twins and parallel-twins and they sold their engines to other manufacturers. Following their success at building engines, AJ Stevens and Co. (which was named after Joe Stevens' son Albert John) began operations building motorcycles in 1909 in Wolverhampton with their first model appearing in the 1910 Motor Show. This family business became very successful and with the increased production had to move to a new, bigger factory at Graiseley House outside Wolverhampton in 1914.

The Stevens family continued developing and making advances in motorcycle engine design for many years, and were successful in launching the AJS S3 V-twin in 1931. This was a 496 cc transverse V-twin tourer with shaft primary drive, three speed bevel driven gearbox and alloy cylinder heads. The production of this engine had been very expensive, but sales were slow and the company began to struggle financially. In 1931, the company went bankrupt and were taken over by the Collier brothers' company Matchless. The Collier brothers were well aware of the success the Stevens family had had in racing, and so continued to use the initials AJS on their new racing machinery - these racing bikes kept the name alive.

In the years that followed, the name AJS changed hands but continued to be linked with successful motorcycle racing bikes. Today AJS Motorcycles Ltd is owned by Nick Brown and since 2002 has distributed a range of 124 cc to 300 cc Chinese produced road bikes in trail, custom cruiser and roadster styles.
