DOT Cycle and Motor manufacturing Company, based in Salford, England was established in 1903 by Harry Reed. Their first Motorcycle was built in 1906 using a Peugeot engine. By 1907 the Company had moved to Manchester to occupy a larger premises. Fame was brought to this company with Reed’s Twin Cylinder Class race (Isle of Man TT) using a DOT. Thomas Sawer joined the business in 1920 and yet another change in the company was Reeds departure in 1925. With the onset of 1930’s recession, production for this company slowed down and the buusiness underwent yet another change when Sawer handed over to Burnard Wade. It was in 1949 that this company manufactured a motorcycle, a utilitarian 2 stroke machine with a 200cc Villiers engine. These were received really well with the export market and are quite desirable even today. 1951 saw the introduction of the “Trials Scrambler” a nimble light weight maching that could not only hold its own but actually beat of the larger machines predominant in the racing sport. The DOT factory is still in existance, in Manchester, and produces a range of spares for post war machines.
