Harley Davidson

HARLEY
Harley-Davidson is an American motorcycle manufacturer based in Milwaukee. The company sells heavyweight motorcycles sesignes for highway cruising. “Harleys” have a distinctive exhaust note, design and a tradition of heavy customisation (chopper style motorcycle). Todays Harleys, apart from the VRSC model, reflect the style of the classic Harley design. So how did this “Legend Motorcycle” appear on the motorcycling scene?
William S Harley, in 1901, drew up plans for a small engine to be used in a pedal bicycle frame. He laboured on this project for 2 years with his friend Arthur Davidson eventualy finishing it in 1903 only to write off this project as a learning experience after ‘trying it out’. The boys started working immediatle on the next project making the engine bigger. The prototype of the new loop-frame Harley-Davidson was assembled in a shed. It was functional by 8th Spetember, 1904 and competed in a Milwaukee motorcycle race at State Fair Park.
By April of 1905 a limited number of Harleys were being produced and sold by the first ever Harley Dealer, Carl H Lang of Chicago. In 1906 Harley set up base in Chestnut Street and soon moved to Juneau Avenue (this today is H-D’s headquarters). The company produced around 50 motorcycle in that year.
Harley-Davidson expanded in 1907 and production increased to 150 motorcycles! Motorcycles produced in 1905 and 1906 were single-cylinder models however in 1907 H-D displayed a prototype model with a 45-degree V-twin engine at the Chicago Automobile Show. One hundred and fifty makes of motorcycles had been built by 1911 and a new V-Twin model was also introduced that year.
The famous H-D logo was used for the first time in 1910 and trademarked 1 year later. During 1917 one-third of motorcycle produced were sold to the U.S. Military. A school called Quartermasters opened for business and had a department devoted to training military mechanics on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In 1920 Harley-Davidson took the title of the largest Motorcycle manufacturer in the world. New H-D's could be purchased in 2,000 dealers in 67 countries worldwide. 1925 saw the trademark teardrop shaped gas tank, this was then used for all Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
H-D branched out into clothing and In 1947 started selling black leather motorcycle jackets, little did they know it would become a classic. 1953 marked 50 years in the business for Harley-Davidson. Elvis Presley posses on the 1956 KH model for the May Enthusiast magazine. The legend of Superbikes was born in 1957 in the form of the Sportster, it was released to the general public. The FXEF Fat Bob was introduced in 1979. The Harley Owners Group was started in 1983, referred to as H.O.G. by 2000 they have over 500,000 members. Harley-Davidson releases the Heritage Softail in 86. The H-D museum went on the road showcasing motorcycles, memorabilia and the history so far of Harley-Davidson.
