Lambretta – This company started out in 1922 as Steel tubing factory in Rome. The owner Ferdinando Innocenti moved the company to Milan and expanded however the company was bombed in the Second world War and destroyed. Instead of giving in to devastation Innocenti decided to go with the future and started scooter production. D’Ascanio, the designer of the first modern helicopter was recruted by Innocenti to design a scooter suitable for both men and women. D’Ascanio designed a revolutionary scooter built on a spar frame, with the engine mounted directly on the rear wheel and gear change located on the handle bar but this was not good enough for Innocenti as he wanted to produce the frame from rolled tubing. D’Ascanio and Innoncenti parted company and it took Innocenti another year before completing the design and so the Lambretta was born taking its name from the small river Lambro, which ran near the factory, in Milan. The production of the Lambretta Scooters began in 1947
