Silk motorcycles history begins in the late 1960s when George Silk. A Scott motorcycle enthusiast built a Scott engine tuned racer. Following the success of this invention he decided to build a road legal version and the first prototype was displayed at the Racing and Motorcycle Show, in 1971, in London. This prototype generated a lot of interest and many orders were taken. Between 1971 and 1975 there were 21 more Silk-Scott Special motorcycles and each one was unique, hand built to the specification of the buyer. Each new owner was asked to provide their own Scott crankcase and in time, because of the limited availability of Scott crankcases, Silk decided to design and make his own engine. This engine was designed & developed by George Silk, David Midgelow and Dr Gorden Blair. The 700S as it became known, was launched in 1975 and was the most expensive machine on the market at that time. In 1977 this machine was give a major facelift and the 700S Mk2 was borne, aptly named the Sabre.
The last motorcycle to bear the Silk name was in 1987. This was specially built as a competition prize for Classic Bike Magazine.
