Vincent motorcycles known as “The Makers of the World’s Fastest Motorcycles” were established in May 1928, by Phil Vincent. He had built a motorcycle for himself in 1927 and a year later had registered a patent for a cantilever rear suspension of his own design. Vincent was advised to start production under an established name and so he bought HRD, renamed it Vincent HRD Co., Ltd and moved the production to Stevenage. The new trademark for this company was also launched – “Vincent” written in small writing above “HRD” which was written in large letters. Vincent dropped the HRD from the name in 1949 to avoid any confusion with the “HD” of Harley Davidson as he wanted to break into the USA motorcycle market. The motorcycle became “The Vincent” The first Vincent-HRD motorcycle manufactured, in 1928 used a JAP single-cylinder engine with some early bikes using the Rudge-python engines. After a disastrous Isle of Man TT in 1934 Vincent decided to build their own engines. 1932 saw the first 3-wheeler for this company, “The Vincent Bantam” powered by a 293cc Villiers Engine. The Vincent HRD series A Rapide, introduced in 1936 was followed by the series B Rapide in 1946, then in 1950 came the Vincent Comet. A few others followed but the one to make an impact was the NSU Vincent Fox – this motorcycle was a very expensive hand built one and only around 11,000 were sold. This brings us to the Last Vincent motorcycle which came off the production line just one week before Christmas 1955 and was labelled “The Last”
