AJW Motorcycles Ltd, named after Arthur John Wheaton, was a British company established in 1928 and based in Exeter.
The most well known AJW bikes were the Red Panther and the Grey Fox, but they are also known for the production of the Silver Vixen, the Silver Fox, the Vixen, the Flying Fox and the Speed Fox. The motorcycles made by AJW were expensive, top of the range and production was limited to at most 250 per year. Although AJW did manage to survive the Great Depression, the company discontinued the Anzani powered V-twin engine in 1931 and during the period of the second world war, the company ceased trading altogether. Following the war, the company changed ownership a couple of times.
Then, in 1953 the company produced their last bike, the 125 cc Fox Cub following which they began importing Italian 2 stroke engines from Italy. In the 1970’s, they produced the Champion, the Whippet, the Collie and the Pointer which were all Italian models with the AJW badge. In 1981 the company ceased trading, but, despite this, AJW bikes are still greatly respected and sought after today.
