Rampdale are the leading experts for all Ariel Bike Insurance
The company Ariel was initially started in 1870 by James Stanley and William Hillman who intended to manufacture bicycles. James Stanley himself is regarded as the father of the British cycling industry and the name Ariel (which Shakespeare used in Tempest for a “spirit of the air”) was actually called after the Penny Farthing which was said to be very light. While Hillman went into the car manufacturing industry in 1872, Stanley continued in the development of bicycles. In 1896, Ariel merged with Westwood Manufacturing in and went on to produce the first powered tricycle powered by a deDion engine.
In 1902, Ariel produced its first motorcycle, the Kerry, which had a float car carburettor and magneto ignition. In 1905 the company was taken over by Charles Sangster who produced the Arielette which had a three speed two stroke engine. Following the First World War, Charles Sangster’s son Jack took over the company and successfully produced a motorcycle with a White and Poppe 4 hp engine. Jack Sangster also expanded the range of motorcycles to include the production of 586 cc and 992 cc machines. Ariel then merged with a company called Components Ltd. This joint venture was unsuccessful, but in 1930 Jack Sangster opened a factory in Birmingham and produced the Ariel Square Four and the Ariel Red Hunter.
During the Second World War, Ariel began to produce military motorcycles, the most notable being the Ariel W/NG 350 based on the Red Hunter, BSA bought the company in 1944 following which the 500cc KH and the Huntmaster were produced, the latter becoming popular with sidecar enthusiasts. In 1959, the Ariel Leader was produced with a 250cc two stroke which was fully enclosed. BSA moved the factory to Small Heath in 1963 and in 1967 produced their last motorcycle, the Ariel Arrow.
