CCM was founded in 1971 in Bolton, England by Alan Clews who was a successful Trials and Scrambles rider in the late 1960s. He wanted a lighter, more nimble and modern motocross bike, like the BSA 500cc. Using what remained from BSA’s off road competition team and spares he had purchased, he successfully began producing his own motorcycles in his garage. In 1981, Armstrong bought a majority share in the company and Clews designed a competition bike for road races. The company acquired the rights to the Rotax engine enduro motorcycle SWM XN Tornado from the Italian owners and then developed the Armstrong MT500, a bike famously used by the British military in the Falklands War. Throughout the 1980’s, in addition to supplying military off-road vehicles, Armstrong- CCM also produced several thousand trail and motor cross bikes. They also produced electric start bikes for the military forces of Canada and Jordan. In 1983, the company was licensed by the Canadian firm Bombardier Recreational Products to develop and produce Can-Am Motorcycles which they did successfully till 1987. Armstrong then sold his military motorcycle business to Harley Davidson and CCM back to Clews who went back to producing motorcycles again. Armstrong also sold the road racing department of the company (including stock, manufacturing rights etc.) to Colin Hopper of CWH Developments in Lancashire.
