BMW started of designing and manufacturing airplane engines before the World War 1. At the end of WWI Germany was forbidden to manufacture airplanes so with this Max reluctantly looked to motorcycles and cars to keep the company going...and the rest is history! BMW merged with The Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in 1922 and the two merged companies were renamed Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) by Karl Rapp and Max Friz and with this merger came a new logo which is still used to this day on motorcycles and cars. Right from the start of its motorcycle manufacturing days BMW has periodically introduced single cylinder models, however sadly the last one of these offered was in 1967, the R27 as riders now wanted sportier motorcycles.
BMW became the first ever non UK Company to win the Isle of Man TT race in 1939. They also dominated the Dakar Rally – a tough endurance event featuring an extremely challenging terrain and a course which spans two continents – BMW have won this event six times!
